HGTV Lied To You

Modern living room with staged decor and subtle signs of real-life homeownership and renovation projects
We need to talk about what HGTV did to all of us.

Somewhere along the way, we collectively started believing:
  • every renovation takes two weekends
  • every couple agrees on backsplash choices
  • every homebuyer casually has an extra $150,000 hidden in a coffee can
  • and every demo day ends with someone laughing in perfectly clean jeans
Respectfully… absolutely not.

Don’t get us wrong — home inspiration is fun. Design ideas are great. We love a dramatic before-and-after moment as much as anyone else. But real-life homeownership looks a little different than a 42-minute TV episode with a soundtrack and commercial breaks.

Here are a few ways HGTV may have slightly misled the population.

1. Renovations Almost Always Take Longer Than Expected

TV timelines are fake. There, we said it.

In reality:
  • contractors get booked out
  • materials get delayed
  • permits take time
  • surprise issues appear
  • and somebody always discovers “one more thing” behind a wall
A kitchen renovation does not usually take six business days while everyone smiles through drywall dust.

2. Budgets Get Real Very Fast

HGTV budgets:
“We’re hoping to stay around $40,000.”

Actual renovation reality:
“Well apparently the electrical panel was fighting for its life.”

Small projects can snowball quickly once work begins, especially in older homes. This is why professionals always recommend leaving room in the budget for unexpected expenses.

Because there will be unexpected expenses.
There are ALWAYS unexpected expenses.

3. Open Concept Isn’t Automatically Better

We blame television for convincing everyone they need to remove every wall immediately.

Open layouts can absolutely feel larger and brighter, but they are not perfect for everyone.

Sometimes people actually enjoy:
  • doors
  • privacy
  • quiet
  • hiding kitchen messes
  • not hearing every sound from every room simultaneously
Revolutionary concept, honestly.

4. Not Every Upgrade Adds Major Value

Just because something looks trendy online doesn’t mean it dramatically increases resale value.

Some upgrades absolutely help:
  • paint
  • lighting
  • curb appeal
  • maintenance
  • updated fixtures
But expensive hyper-personal remodels don’t always return what homeowners expect financially.

Sometimes the smartest investment is simply making a home feel clean, functional, and well-maintained.

5. “Perfect” Homes Usually Aren’t Perfect

One thing buyers quickly learn during home shopping?

Every house has something.

Maybe it’s:
  • a weird layout
  • tiny laundry room
  • outdated bathroom
  • awkward driveway
  • questionable paint choices from 2007
The goal usually isn’t finding a flawless house. It’s finding the right balance of location, condition, lifestyle fit, and long-term potential.

6. Homeownership Is Less Glamorous… and More Rewarding

HGTV tends to focus on dramatic reveals and aesthetic moments.

But real homeownership is also:
  • replacing air filters
  • mowing lawns
  • fixing leaks
  • cleaning gutters
  • learning where your water shutoff valve is at 11 PM
Oddly enough though? Those things become part of what makes a house feel like yours.

Final Thoughts

HGTV may have set some wildly unrealistic expectations for renovations, timelines, and budgets… but it also helped people get excited about creating spaces they truly love.

And honestly? That part is worth keeping.

Because homeownership isn’t about perfection. It’s about building a life inside a space that works for you — messy projects, surprise expenses, crooked cabinet handles, and all.
